Well wholly doodle! Isn't this a strange situation we find ourselves in? Yep, things are all sorts of topsy-turvy. But hey, I'm working on my website. New things have been added, and will continue to be added in the coming days. So far, I have worked in the Math section

Hello Parents and Guardians!
Welcome to Division 6. My name is Adam Surina and I am excited to be teaching grade 2/3 this year. I am new to Wiltse school, and have enjoyed settling into your warm and welcoming community. Our class is made up of 4 grade 2 students, and 19 grade 3 students, but I see them as one entity and plan to instruct them at their levels. For math, I will be starting each unit in the grade 2 curriculum, and taking it through to the end of the grade 3 curriculum. For language arts, I will be teaching lessons and units that are relevant to both curricula, and assessing them based on grade-level performance standards. For all of the remaining subject areas, I am planning to teach units that meet the learning standards for both grades. I am hoping to use FreshGrade this year, as my experience with it was very positive last year. Thus, there is likely to be an after school parent meeting in the future where I can teach you about this wonderful piece of software, and address any questions that you might have. Lately, we have been working on community building. The goal is to provide students with the experiences, tools, and support they need to create and be a citizen of a safe and welcoming classroom community. I am also sneaking-in some assessments. We have begun to settle into some routines, such as journals, silent reading, and read aloud, and have started our study of math with patterning. by the beginning of next month, I look forward to tucking into all of the different subjects for the year. I look forward to meeting you all at the open house next week! Adam Surina, [email protected] Wholly doodle. It's been a while since my last post. so here's the scoop lately.
Today, we launched our social studies projects. The link is the outline document. students can choose from a number of ways to show their understanding of Copper Inuit culture. For me, this is the first time I have done a big differentiated project with a class, so it won't just be the students learning! In Math, we've been multiplying for a while, but the big stumbling block for students lately, has been 2x2 digit multiplication. Please take the time to work with your kids on the homework assigned this week, as your one-on-one guidance will help greatly. Most students are using the LATTICE method to solve 2x2 digit problems, and for most of you parents, this is a new thing, so here is an image that might help. Drumming! we are drumming this week. we're learning a lot about rythm, dance, and music. if you want to see how much we've learned, come on down on Wednesday morning at 8:50 to see our wrap-up performances! Threat assessment: We have the green-light from the RCMP and the school board to return to business as usual. I think the whole event served as a good teachable moment for students. It provided the opportunity to learn about some social issues as well as an opportunity to review some standards such as stranger-danger and lockdown procedures. That's all for now folks! I'll try to be more consistent with my posts from here-on out. Mr. Surina Happy Newyear!!
Welcome back everyone. That was a lot of snow! I want to remind everyone about our Ski trips and what to pack/expect. Key Information: - We will be skiing on January 8, 15, and 22 - The bus will always leave at 8:30 am and will return at 3:30 pm or shortly thereafter - Bus students might need to make plans to get home on those dates - I think we have our 2 chaperones, but if anyone is interested, please let me know ([email protected] ) - We will be picking up Westbench students en route to Apex, so if you are planning to meet us or be late, this is the place to be - All chaperones need to have completed Criminal Records Checks Things kids need: - snow pants - warm jacket - gloves/mittens (2 pairs if possible - they get wet) - a toque or warm hat (helmets not required, but are permitted) - possibly a scarf - warm socks (NO THIN LITTLE ANKLE SOCKS!!) - lots of food and water Things to consider: - vacuum sealed foods might burst in backpacks due to the altitude (it happens all the time) - sometimes double layering socks can help prevent blisters from boots - sun glasses or ski goggles make skiing more enjoyable (blowing snow hurts the eyes) - dress in layers - its a long windey, bumpy bus ride with lots of kids. If you have tricks to prevent nausea, use them (gravol probably isn't a good idea though...we dont want no sleepy skiiers) - peppermint chewing gum sometimes helps with nausea and popping ears as altitude changes - electronic devices are permitted (for the bus ride) but as always, the school accepts no liability for lost, stolen or broken devices Finally, I am certain that this list is anything but coprehensive, so if you think of anything that would make your child's trip that much more awesome, be sure to include it in their skiing kit. Yey skiing! Mr. Surina Hi all,
I just wanted to let you know that I am having some techical issues with my computer at work and it's interface with my weebly account. I am working to get it resolved, but my website might not be updated for a few days here and there in the interim. If there is anything really important that needs to be published on my website, I will make sure to get it done from home. If you are worried about planner notes or newsfeed updates, please feel free to email me and I will keep you up to date that way. Sorry for any inconvenience, Mr. Surina Hi all,
I just wanted to let you know that the due date for the "My Ed" forms is November 17 (Monday). I also would like to express that this document is important, so please read them carefully. Essentially, after switching from our former reporting program (BCeSIS) to the new one (MyEd) the office staff had to carry all student information over from one system to the next. Therefore, they want to make sure that all of the information is correct Hi All,
I would like to make a disclaimer about the following Youtube video. This is a fantastic video about life in the trenches. It clearly depicts what life in the trenches was like without going into explicit detail about every little thing. That said, there are some images that students may find disturbing: pictures of trench foot, bodies, injured people, and the effects of chlorine gas attacks. These images are not rested upon for long, but they are present. Therefore, I suggest this video, but with parental discression. I have told the class that they are to watch the video only with a parent. It is not my intention to cause any discomfort or trauma to my students. I highly advise that parents preview the video before deciding whether to show their children. Life in the Trenches Thank you, Mr. Surina Hi All,
Just a few notes for y'all. 1- in math we have started our study of Place Value. We worked on reviewing how to place numbers in a place value chart, how to say large numbers (trying not to say "and" at the end of a number), and writing numbers in expanded form. We will likely be continuing this unit until christmas break, as it is so fundamental to a child's understanding of number concepts. 2 - we have started our writing project for the Remembrance day assembly (next Monday). we have spend much of the day learning about WWI, and have begun writing our letters to or from a soldier. I will be taking pieces from each letter and using them to create a composite of each letter to be read at the assembly. 3 - in gym, we have begun learning basketball skills, and will continue with basketball for the next month or so. 4 - our class has collected the most food out of any class in the school. I just want to say thank you to all of the families who contributed to this initiative to end hunger in our community, and thank you to the Me2We kids who worked so hard to make this food drive a whopping success. 5 - marked assignments will be coming home thursday or friday (math and spelling) that's all folks, Mr. Surina Hi All,
I have added the jeopardy powerpoint (patterns and equations) to the math section of my website. We have a test on Friday, and I thought the game might be a fun way for parents and students to study together. Here is the blurb about Halloween: Hello Parents, Halloween is this Friday, and I just wanted to address any questions that you might have concerning costumes, the class party, and the costume parade. Costumes: · Students will be permitted to wear their costumes all day · Students cannot bring costume accessories such as knives and guns or other weapons o If brought to school, these items will be confiscated, and returned at the end of the day · Costumes are expected to be appropriate for all ages within the school o We don’t want costumes to terrify kindergartners, or expose them to anything inappropriate · Students should avoid excessive gore and blood when preparing their costumes for school o We’ll have to ask them to remove/cover the offending component · Costumes are expected to provide appropriate bodily coverage o Students will be asked to cover up if too much skin is showing. Class Party/Food and Drink · We will be having a class party after lunch · Students and parents are not obligated to bring food/drinks but all contributions are welcome and appreciated. · Please ensure that if you are sending food/drinks that you send enough for 30 students. · In the interest of health, low sugar foods/drinks would be appreciated o This is not a rule. Please just consider and be aware of sugar when buying/making treats · Please do not send pop or soft drinks. · Our classroom and school are Peanut Free zones o All food and drink must not contain peanuts or traces of peanuts o Please read labels carefully § E.g., Smarties are safe, M&Ms are not Class Party/ Activities · We will be watching a film on Netflix called “Hotel Transylvania ”. it is rated PG, so if you have any concerns, please let me know and I will make accommodations as necessary. · There will be a costume parade right after lunch, followed by a bit of a dance party in the gym So far 2 parents have offered to supply fruit/veg and cupcakes. If anyone would like to offer drinks or other treats, your contributions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all, Mr. Surina Hi all,
Week two has begun. We are getting into all sorts of learning. I just wanted to let you all know, that headlice have been spotted in the school, and thus, it is time to begin checking your children's heads. If lice are spotted, please do not send your child to school until phase 1 of treatment has been completed |
